Richard Bentley’s „ingenious” illustrations for Thomas Gray’s poems which the author felt were merely “subordinate & explanatory to the Drawings”. It was real bestseller these days: the first edition appeared in 1753 and it was re-printed three times in the same year. The poems include “Ode on the Spring”, “Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton Cathedral”, “Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard”, “Ode on the Death of a Favourite Cat”, “A Long Story”, “Hymn to Adversity”.
